A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who is embedded directly inside the business that uses the software. Instead of taking tickets from a product manager, an FDE sits with the operators, works out what is actually broken, builds the software, deploys it into production, and stays until people are using it every day.
The role is also written as Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE), or just FDE. It started at Palantir in the early 2010s, where engineers were sent into government agencies and banks because the software could not be handed over at the door and left to work by itself. Somebody had to go in with it.
It has since become one of the most in-demand engineering roles in the world. OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, Ramp and PostHog all hire FDEs, for the same reason: AI can now build almost anything, which means the hard part is no longer writing the code. The hard part is knowing exactly what to build for one specific business — and getting the people there to actually use it.
In Malaysia the title is still rare. The work is not: every SME here is running on WhatsApp threads, paper forms and one person's memory, and somebody has to go in and change that.
Almost no business software fails because the code was wrong. It fails in the gap between what the software can do and what one specific business needs it to do on a Tuesday morning. An FDE is the person who stands in that gap.

Who: 3+ years, has taken software from an empty repo into daily use by people who did not ask for it.
Runs deployments across several businesses at once, sets the pattern other FDEs copy, and decides what gets built into Boss OS versus what stays a one-off tool.
There is no FDE degree. Four routes in, and we hire from all four — find where you are standing.
You have the build half. The gap is the room: sitting with a non-technical operator, watching your own tool get ignored, and fixing that instead of blaming training. Come in and pick up the customer half here.
Show us something you built and shipped that a real person uses — even one person, even a small thing. A portfolio of tutorials is not the same as one tool somebody depends on.
You already have the rarest half. You know where work actually breaks because you have been the one it broke on. We will fill in the engineering.
You can hold a room and you understand a business. Prove you can ship code to production without a vendor behind you, and this is a straight upgrade.
The one exercise that matters
Build something small and get one real person to use it — a cousin's shop, your old department, anyone. Then sit next to them while they use it and say nothing. Watch every place they hesitate. Fix those. Do that once and you will understand this job better than most engineers with five years' experience.

A software engineer is measured on shipping the feature. An FDE is measured on whether the feature gets used. That changes the job: you write your own requirements by watching the work, you deploy into someone else's business, and you are still there on the day the staff try it and it does not fit. An FDE is also not a consultant — you hand over working software, not a recommendation.

Build and deploy something end-to-end for one real user — not a tutorial project. Learn to work AI-native with tools like Claude Code or Cursor, and learn to review what they write. Then get practice in the uncomfortable half: sit with somebody non-technical while they use your software and watch where they get stuck. That last skill is the one most engineers never train.
