Malaysia Techlympics 2026 targets 1.8 million participants. Here is what the AI programme actually offers
The fifth edition adds an agentic-AI learning platform to a much wider competition programme. The 1.8 million figure is a participation target, not a completed headcount.

Techlympics added agentic AI to a nationwide, multi-technology youth programme
Malaysia Techlympics returned for its fifth edition in July 2026 with a very large ambition: MOSTI said it expected 1.8 million participations from students and youths across the country. The programme was designed for people aged six to 30 and combined competitions, outreach, education and training outside the classroom.[1][3]
The headline technology addition was AiRIMAU, which the ministry described as an intelligent learning platform where participants could explore agentic artificial intelligence through interactive and practical experiences. AI also appeared within a broader menu of robotics, drones, cybersecurity, engineering, cloud computing, biotechnology and green-technology activities.[1][2]
Two distinctions keep the announcement in perspective. First, 1.8 million was a target rather than a verified number of completed learners. Second, the 182 modules were STI modules, not 182 AI courses. Techlympics offered a wide technology pathway in which AI was one growing component. The quality test would be what participants actually did, learned and carried forward after registration.[1][3]

The 1.8 million figure described reach, not mastery
MOSTI positioned Techlympics as a national talent-development programme aligned with the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2021–2030. The ministry said the 2026 edition would work through the Education Ministry, state education departments, government agencies, industry partners and state governments.[1]
The participation target was broad enough to include different forms of engagement: competitions, inclusive outreach, education and training activities. That means a registration, a short exposure session and a multi-stage competition entry may represent very different levels of learning even if each contributes to overall reach.[1][3]
A strong public report would therefore separate unique people from repeat participations, registrations from attendance, and attendance from completion. Age, state, school type, rural access, PPKI participation and activity depth would make the scale figure more useful than one combined headline number.[1]

AiRIMAU is the new AI layer, while most of Techlympics remains broader STEM
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said AiRIMAU was intended to give young Malaysians early exposure to agentic AI and help them use future technologies responsibly, creatively and ethically. The official material described the learning as interactive and practical, but did not publish the platform's lesson sequence, assessment method or technical safeguards.[1][3]
The official programme portal showed AI appearing in specific activities, including AI-linked drone and coding challenges, alongside robotics, aerospace, science, engineering and inclusion programmes. MOSTI said the 2026 edition contained 90 competitions covering 182 STI modules; the list confirms that Techlympics is a multi-disciplinary technology programme rather than an AI-only initiative.[1][2]
That wider design can be an advantage. A learner may encounter sensors, mechanical design, data, code, flight control or problem-solving before deciding whether AI is the right tool. The meaningful AI outcome is not whether the term appears in a competition title, but whether participants can explain the system, test its behaviour and build something safely with it.[1][2]
Seven zonal routes and inclusion programmes were meant to widen access
The zonal competition route was scheduled from July to September 2026. It began in the Southern Zone at TAR UMT in Johor, then moved through the Central, Eastern, second Eastern, Northern, Sabah and Sarawak zones at named universities and Kulim Hi-Tech Park. The national final was scheduled for November at MAEPS in Serdang.[1][3]
MOSTI also said selected rural schools would receive outreach programmes and that students in the Integrated Special Education Programme, or PPKI, would be included. Those commitments matter because national technology competitions can otherwise favour teams with better equipment, experienced mentors and easier travel to host venues.[1]
Access becomes measurable when the organiser reports where outreach occurred, how teams were supported, which accommodations were available and whether learners could progress beyond an introductory event. A national final can celebrate the strongest teams, while the broader public value depends on what happens to participants who never reach that stage.[1][2]
Why Malaysia should care
Malaysia Techlympics can widen early exposure to AI and future technologies if its national scale reaches learners beyond well-resourced schools. The useful public measures are not only registrations, but who participated, which activities they completed, what they could demonstrate afterwards and whether rural and special-education access was sustained.
Students and youth
The programme provides routes into practical technology activities across age groups and disciplines.[1][2]
Practical move: Use the official portal to match age, location and competition eligibility before registering, then keep evidence of completed work.
Parents, teachers and schools
A large national menu can be useful, but the depth, equipment and supervision requirements differ by activity.[1][2]
Practical move: Check the official module rules, safeguarding, travel, device and mentoring requirements rather than relying on the 1.8 million headline.
Policy and programme owners
Rural and PPKI inclusion commitments make participation quality as important as scale.[1]
Practical move: Publish unique-participant, completion, geography, inclusion and demonstrated-skill outcomes after the edition.
What Malaysians can do now
- Register only through the official Techlympics portal and verify the competition, age category, zone, rules and dates.
- Treat the 1.8 million figure as a programme target until final participation and completion data is published.
- Ask for outcome reporting that separates exposure, completion, demonstrated skill, rural reach and PPKI participation.
What we still do not know
The launch set the scale and programme direction, but several learning and delivery measures remained unpublished.
- How many unique people, rather than total participations, would make up the 1.8 million target and how many completed an activity.
- What AiRIMAU's lessons, assessments, data handling, age safeguards and measures of learning would be.
- How rural outreach, PPKI support, equipment access and participant progression would be reported after the edition.
