Google offers eligible students one year of Gemini free. Malaysians need five checks
The offer can be valuable, but it needs a personal account, student verification, a payment method and a reminder before recurring billing begins.
In brief
- Google announced on 19 August 2026 that eligible college students outside the United States could receive Google AI Plus for 12 months at no charge in more than 140 supported markets.[1]

Google opened a 12-month student plan with eligibility and renewal conditions
Google's student programme is a real 12-month subscription offer, not an anonymous giveaway or a Malaysian university entitlement. Eligibility is checked against the student, institution, country, personal Google account and payment setup used at redemption.[1][2]
Outside the United States, the plan is Google AI Plus rather than the US-only Google AI Pro offer. Google lists more than 140 supported markets and names Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong and Tunisia as exclusions. Malaysia is not on that list, and the terms page reviewed from Malaysia carries the country code MY, but the final decision still happens inside Google's eligibility flow.[1][2]
The five checks happen before a Malaysian student gets the offer
First, the user must be 18 or older. Second, the user must be enrolled at a higher-education institution in a country or region where the included subscription is supported. Third, student status must be verified through SheerID. Fourth, the account must be a personal Google account rather than a school-issued Workspace for Education account. Fifth, Google requires a Google Payments account with a qualifying form of payment at sign-up.[2]
The terms also exclude several account situations that can surprise users. A person does not qualify if the account is part of a family group, is supervised, already receives Google One through certain third parties, or falls within other listed purchaser and bundle categories. Google reserves the right to decide eligibility, so a university email address alone is not proof that the offer will activate.[2]
The paid plan and the new study tools are related, but they are not identical
Google's announcement pairs the subscription offer with a student hub, study notebooks, interactive visualisations and Deep Research in Gemini Live. The student hub can organise notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes. Study notebooks can work from uploaded class materials, identify knowledge gaps, create lessons and quizzes, and track progress. Google also said calendar scheduling from a syllabus would arrive with the user's permission.[1]
There is an important boundary: Google says the student hub, study notebooks, interactive visualisations and Deep Research in Gemini Live were rolling out to all Gemini app users. The subscription expands plan capacity and benefits, but students should not assume every newly announced learning feature exists only inside the paid tier. The safest comparison is the actual plan page displayed on the student's account at redemption.[1]
Malaysia's public-university access is a separate institutional layer
Google reported in March 2026 that all 20 Malaysian public universities had enabled Gemini for Education within their academic and administrative environments, reaching nearly 600,000 students and 75,000 faculty members. That institutional access sits inside the universities' Google Workspace for Education environment and includes its own security, administration and product arrangements.[3]
The new student offer is different. Google's terms require a personal Google account and explicitly say the offer is not available on a school-issued Workspace for Education account. A Malaysian public-university student may therefore have institutional Gemini access for coursework and still need a separate personal-account verification and payment setup to redeem the consumer subscription offer.[2][3]
The most practical date is the one before automatic billing
Google says the offer must be redeemed by 31 December 2026. The 12-month clock begins on the day the offer is redeemed, not on the announcement date. When that period ends, the payment method may be charged the standard monthly price for the applicable local plan unless the subscription is cancelled. Google's public announcement gives a US-dollar reference for the international plan or the local-currency equivalent, but this review did not capture a confirmed Malaysian ringgit renewal price.[1][2]
Students should also watch storage. Google warns that after cancellation, an account using more storage than its remaining allowance may be unable to store new material until files are removed or another membership is purchased. The sensible workflow is to record the redemption date, renewal date, local price shown at checkout and storage usage on the same day the offer is accepted.[2]
Why Malaysia should care
Malaysia is not named among the exclusions in Google's international offer, and the live terms page identifies the reviewing country as MY. That makes the offer relevant to Malaysian higher-education students, but successful redemption still depends on the institution, account, verification and payment checks performed at sign-up.
Malaysian university students
The offer can provide a year of expanded personal AI access, but institutional access or a university email does not remove the personal eligibility checks.[2][3]
Practical move: Open the official offer page while signed in to the intended personal account and record every condition shown before accepting.
Parents and student advisers
A no-charge first year can still create a later billing or storage commitment if the renewal date is forgotten.[2]
Practical move: Set a reminder at least 30 days before renewal and review whether the plan is still useful.
Universities and lecturers
Students may move between institution-managed tools and personal consumer accounts, each with different administration and data boundaries.[2][3]
Practical move: Tell students which account should hold course materials and which information should not be copied into a personal AI service.
What Malaysians can do now
- Use only Google's official offer page and read the terms shown for the intended personal account.
- Confirm age, institution, SheerID verification, payment method and account exclusions before relying on the offer.
- Save the redemption date, renewal date, Malaysian price displayed at checkout and a cancellation reminder.
What we still do not know
The global rules are public; each Malaysian account still needs a live eligibility check.
- The exact Malaysian ringgit renewal price that will be shown to each eligible account after the 12-month period.
- Whether every Malaysian higher-education institution will pass Google's institution-level eligibility check in the same way.
- How the available plan benefits and usage limits may change before an individual student's renewal date.
