Anthropic Donates Agent Skills Standard to the Linux Foundation’s AAIF
Anthropic has handed the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation. The sources describe a change of governance and name no Malaysian adopters or release dates.

In brief
- Anthropic said on 22 October 2026 that it is donating Agent Skills, an open standard that gives AI agents reusable instructions, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation.[1][2]
- Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms support the standard, with 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installs. These are Anthropic’s figures.[1]
- Neither Anthropic nor the Linux Foundation names a Malaysian adopter or gives release dates for the proposed roadmap.[1][2]
What Anthropic and the Linux Foundation announced
Anthropic is donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation, according to its post of 22 October 2026. Agent Skills is an open standard that lets an AI agent load specialised instructions for a task. The AAIF is a neutral body under the Linux Foundation, which Anthropic says it co-founded with Block and OpenAI last year.[1]
The Linux Foundation confirmed the move in a release dated the same day. It lists Agent Skills among four new AAIF projects, alongside Open Responses from OpenAI, OpenEnv from Hugging Face and OpenSandbox from Alibaba. The foundation now hosts 10 projects, up from three at its December 2025 launch.[2]

What Agent Skills is
The standard’s own site describes a skill as a folder containing a SKILL.md file. The file holds a name, a description and instructions, and the folder can also carry scripts, reference material and templates. Anthropic says it built skills while working on Claude Code, which handled general knowledge work well but lacked the procedural knowledge that real business tasks need.[1][3]
Agents load skills in stages, the site explains. At startup they read only each skill’s name and description. They read the full instructions when a task matches, then follow them and may run bundled code. This keeps many skills on hand while the load on the agent stays small.[3]

What changes with the donation
Anthropic is donating the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organisation and the agentskills.io domain. It says the standard stays open, community-driven and vendor-neutral, and people can keep using or contributing to it without joining the AAIF. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain it as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers.[1]
Anthropic has proposed a first roadmap covering versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for people who write and install skills. It gives no dates. The Linux Foundation release says the new projects sit under open, vendor-neutral governance. Neither page we read sets out voting rules or funding.[1][2]

How far the adoption claims go
Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, have integrated Agent Skills since it published the standard in December 2025. It also says developers have published 1 million skills and installed nearly 280 million. We could not check these counts independently.[1]
The Linux Foundation release speaks to the foundation’s growth, not to skills usage. It says the AAIF grew from three projects to 10 in its first year. A project count does not show how often skills run in real work, and no source we read gives usage by country.[2]
Why Malaysia should care
Neither source mentions Malaysia. The relevance is practical. Malaysian teams that build agents for clients can package a task once as a skill and test whether their chosen tools read it. Support differs by product, so check each tool’s documentation before you promise a client that a skill will carry over.
Malaysian software houses and integrators
A skill is a plain folder, so a team can version and review it.[1][3]
Practical move: Keep client workflows as skills in a repository and review them like code.
SMEs using AI assistants
Skills can hold company procedures, for example how to prepare a quotation.[1][3]
Practical move: List two repeat tasks and ask your vendor whether its tool reads skills.
IT and security leads
Anthropic plans security guidance for people who write and install skills.[1]
Practical move: Review outside skills before installing them, as you would any software.
What Malaysians can do now
- Read the specification at agentskills.io before you design skills for a client.
- Check each AI tool’s documentation to confirm it supports skills.
- Review any skill from outside your company before you install it, because skills can bundle scripts.
What we still do not know
Several details are still open.
- When the proposed roadmap releases and security guidance will arrive.
- How the AAIF will decide changes to the standard and fund its work.
- Which Malaysian companies use Agent Skills, and how Anthropic counted installs.
