Mistral's model comes to Firefox Smart Window, but not yet to Malaysia
Mozilla is pitching an independent browser plus a European open model as an alternative to Big Tech AI defaults. The privacy promises are notable, but the beta still skips most of the world, Malaysia included.

Mozilla adds a European open model to its AI browser beta
Firefox has picked a European partner for its AI assistant. On 16 September 2026, Mozilla and Mistral said Mistral Small 4 is coming to Firefox Smart Window beta, the browser's AI-powered assistant for picking up tasks across tabs, searches and browsing history.[1][3]
Both companies framed the deal as a defence of choice. Mozilla described it as an open-source alternative to Big Tech-default browser ecosystems, and says Smart Window users can still choose among other AI models.[1]
What Smart Window does, and where Mistral fits
Mozilla describes Smart Window as an optional, privacy-first mode that works with context the user chooses to share, such as open tabs and relevant history. In August it added answers with sources through a partnership with search company Exa, suggested tab groups, duplicate-tab clean-up and visual previews of pages in browsing history.[3]
Mistral Small 4 becomes a new model option within that experience. Mozilla says it chose the model after evaluating its performance for Smart Window, including in multiple languages. Firefox's product page says users can pick from three models or bring their own, and Mozilla says upcoming features include help filling in online forms.[1][4][3]
Where the beta is available, and the fine print
Availability is narrow. Mozilla's announcement says Mistral Small 4 becomes a new model for Smart Window users in the US and Canada, while France gains beta access with official French-language support. Mozilla's Smart Window post, updated the same day, calls France the first expansion beyond North America.[1][3]
The two announcements differ on what comes next. Mistral says the United Kingdom and Germany are expected to follow later this year, while Mozilla says only that it plans additional European expansion. Neither company gives a price, a date for a stable release or any plan for Asia. Users elsewhere can sign up to be told when it arrives.[2][1][3]
The privacy promise, in the companies' own words
Mistral's post says conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default and that partners such as Mistral agree to zero data retention. Firefox's product page goes further, saying Mozilla does not keep chat transcripts, use conversations to train models or sell user data, and that Smart Window's memories are stored on the device.[2][4]
These are company commitments, not audited results. The same page says Mozilla processes limited technical information to keep the service running. Mozilla chief executive Anthony Enzor-DeMeo said a browser should not be a one-way funnel, while Mistral chief executive Arthur Mensch said the deal brings privacy, control and choice to AI-powered browsing.[4][1]
Why Malaysia should care
Malaysian Firefox users cannot use Smart Window yet. Mozilla says the beta is limited to North America and now France, offers a waitlist elsewhere and names no Asian market or Malay-language support. For Malaysian companies, the more lasting point is how browser assistants handle data. The Personal Data Protection Commissioner's automated decision-making and profiling guideline says Act 709 has no specific provisions on such processing, but commercial use must still follow the Personal Data Protection Principles, with a Data Protection Officer engaged early.

The feature is not available here yet, and no date is given.[3][4]

What Malaysians can do now
- Treat Smart Window as a beta for other markets until Mozilla names a Malaysian launch date.
- Before staff share work tabs with any AI browser assistant, check what data it keeps and where it is processed.
- If your company uses AI tools that profile customers, read the PDP Commissioner's guideline and involve your Data Protection Officer early.
What we still do not know
The model is chosen. The global rollout is not.
- When, or whether, Smart Window will reach Malaysia or support Malay.
- How the zero data retention commitment is checked, and by whom.
- Whether Smart Window will carry any charge once it leaves beta.
