Google and Cathay Pacific test AI contrail avoidance in Asia
Google and Cathay Pacific say small altitude changes on more than 80 trial flights cut the warming impact of contrails by roughly 40 percent. No Malaysian airline, airport or regulator is part of the trial.

Aviation's climate problem is not only carbon dioxide. On 7 September 2026 Google and Cathay Pacific announced a partnership to test artificial intelligence that helps pilots avoid creating contrails, the thin white streaks that can spread into heat trapping cloud.[1][2]
Cathay is Google's first commercial airline partner in Asia Pacific for the technology. An operational trial began in late 2025, and more than 80 flights have already flown contrail avoidance routes.[2]
Lawrence Fong, Cathay's Director Digital and IT, said aviation needs solutions to climate change and that AI is accelerating that progress. Michael Yue of Google Hong Kong called it predictive AI in live operations, using today's aircraft and today's fuel.[2]

More than 80 flights and one productive corridor
The numbers are small, and deliberately so. Cathay Pacific and Google targeted more than 100 flights across the airline's network from late 2025, and more than 80 of them actually flew contrail avoidance routes. Cathay says the rest did not take part because of airspace and payload restrictions.[2]
Google's satellite imagery analysis estimates those flights cut the warming impact of their contrails by roughly 40 percent. The Hong Kong to Singapore corridor was one of the routes tested, and early analysis indicates that action on that single route produced more than half of the trial's climate benefit.[2][1]

The forecast has to reach the flight deck
Google's system combines AI prediction models, satellite imagery detection and weather intelligence to forecast the cold, humid bands of air where persistent contrails form. Dispatchers and pilots then plan slight altitude shifts around those bands, much as they already do to steer around turbulence, within established safety parameters.[1][2]
The harder part is delivery. Cathay feeds the forecasts to the cockpit through in flight Wi-Fi and its own Electronic Flight Folder, so pilots see contrail data beside their usual operating numbers. Without that link, a good forecast stays on the ground and changes no flight path.[2][1]
Encouraging results, but still a trial
Both companies are careful about what has been shown. Cathay says the partnership delivered encouraging results on individual flights, and that further trials are needed before anyone can judge the benefit across airlines and airspaces. Previous research suggests persistent contrails could account for around one third of aviation's climate impact.[2]
The partners are now running a larger second phase across Cathay's Asia and transpacific network, joined by Contrails.org, a nonprofit working on contrail science. The stated aim is a robust operational data set for airlines and regulators, not a finished standard other carriers can adopt this year.[2][1]

Malaysia sits beside the busiest Southeast Asian corridor in the trial, yet no Malaysian airline, airport or regulator is named, and contrail avoidance is not required by any rule here. The lesson for local operators is the plumbing rather than the headline. A forecast only matters when it reaches dispatchers and the flight deck in time to change an altitude.
